ROTATIONS
(Let the Plate Guy initiate signals
Wait for your Base Guy to be set up)
No one on, U1 goes out on trouble
Plate guy has it all
Base guy - if you go out, stay out
R1
R1 & R3
Signals: (0,1 or 2 outs)
Plate guy points to 3rd
Base guy points to 1st
Base hit to the outfield
Plate guy - “I got 3rd if he comes”
“I’m going home” when there will not be a play on R1 at 3rd.
R1
Slow roller to short, no play at 2nd.
Who will have 3rd? (EBUA thinks the Plate Guy) ;-)
R1
Ball out in front of the plate, dribbler, bunt, etc.
Plate guy stays home, gets up the 1b line
Responsible for running lane interference, help with pulled foot, swipe.
R1 & R2
Signals (0 or 1 out)
Infield fly
Tag rotation (unless the ball is down the right field line or a troubled ball from the RF to the foul line.)
Plate guy is staying home on a base hit.
Anytime you have R2, R3, R2 & R3, or bases loaded - Plate Guy is staying home.
2 outs - Timing Play
Go over Fair/Foul/Catch/No Catch responsibilities
Go over fly ball coverage with and without runners on.
Go over pop ups and line drives to the infield.
Go over check swings.
Go over Base Guy hand signaling for dropped swinging strikes or balls in the dirt on swinging strikes.
Go over what you can and won’t get help on.
Go over foul balls off the batter in the box.
Go over how the Plate Guy WILL NOT get help on HBP (unless you really missed something badly.)
Go over touches and tag responsibilities.
Go over Rundowns.
Go over Balk calls.
Discuss the force play/side rule and how you guys will work it.
Go over specific rules depending on the age group and/or league you’re working.
Talk about mirroring each other’s calls on balks and foul balls off the batter while in the box.
Discuss fair and foul ball calls up the 1st base line with no one on.
Go over appeals and how you will communicate with one another.
Go over how, if and when you will get help from one another. Discuss any silent communications you might give one another.
NEVER conference on judgment calls unless you're 100% sure you screwed up and want some time to work up the courage to reverse the call.
Discuss how you will confront the coach on the losing side of an overturned call.
(My advice is to discuss this with the coach privately in a conversation before reversing a call publicly.)
Make sure you get PAID!
